Program Overview

This program is designed to bring resource managers and research scientists together to share practical, management-oriented information and to develop solutions to pressing management problems.

The program has four main components:

1. Opening Symposium and Poster Session:

Silviculture Options for Sustainable Management of Pacific Northwest Forest Symposium Presentations and Posters - March 4-6, 2002

2. Field Tours and Problem Solving Workshops:

Managing Species Mixtures in Coastal Forests to Mitigate Swiss Needle Cast - Coast
Shilo Inn,Tillamook, Oregon - Cancelled
We will examine management of coastal forests to combat Swiss Needle Cast through thinning, under-planting, or establishment of mixed species plantations.

Managing Young Conifer Forests for Timber and Amenities - Cascades - Cancelled
CH2M HILL Alumni Center, Corvallis, Oregon
Variable density and selection thinning trials will be visited to develop strategies to manage for timber and diversity.

May 21-22, 2002 - Thinning Alternatives to Promote Diversity in Young Plantations - H.J. Andrews - Cancelled
H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest
Density management principles, thinning and harvesting options, conversion of even-aged stands to uneven-aged structure and legacy management will be examined.

Managing Oak and Oak Woodlands - Willamette Valley - Cancelled
Corvallis, Oregon
We will review the ecology of Oregon white oak including fire history, succession and site variations, and visit oak restoration sites to develop management strategies for oak woodlands and remnants.

Other Field tours and problem solving workshops may be scheduled depending upon subject demand demonstrated by participants in the March symposium.

3. Concluding Forum

November 19-20, 2002 - Silvicultural Options for Sustainable Management of Pacific Northwest Forests (Postpone)
Corvallis, Oregon
A presentation of integrated results of the Spring and Summer field tours and workshops including guiding principles and management alternatives that can be adapted for different management objectives.
