Biographical Information about Susan Charnley

Susan Charnley is a Research Social Scientist at the USDA Forest Service, Pacific Northwest Research Station, Portland Forestry Sciences Lab. She has a B.A. in Environmental Studies and a B.A. in Biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Anthropology from Stanford University. As an environmental anthropologist, Susan’s research focuses on community-based natural resource use and management, and the social causes of environmental change. She is particularly interested in applying her research to contribute to policies and projects that promote the dual goals of ecological conservation and social well-being in natural resource-based communities. She has worked in both forest and savannah ecosystems. Before joining Forest Service Research, Susan was the National Coordinator for the Forest Service Human Dimensions Program.
